The main Power Systems Laboratory is the Smart Grid and Protection Lab, which houses intelligent relays and IEDs from various vendors, including Schweitzer and ABB, real-time computers from OPAL-RT, amplifiers and testers from Doble and Omicron, in addition to other equipment. It is intended to be an educational and research tool for undergraduate and graduate students as well as a training facility for industry engineers. TVA currently is carrying out research in this lab intended as a pilot monitoring system for the Nuclear Auxiliary and Emergency plant. The other laboratories include the Electric Machines and Drives laboratory, The Power Electronics Laboratory and the Linear Controls and Drives Laboratory.
