The Chickamauga Lock Replacement Project includes design and construction of a replacement 110-foot by 600-foot navigation lock to be located downstream of Chickamauga Dam on the Tennessee River in Chattanooga, Tenn., and riverward of the existing lock.

The Chickamauga Lock Replacement Project is located at Mile 471 of the Tennessee River in eastern Tennessee.

BACKGROUND: The project includes design and construction of a replacement 110-foot by 600-foot navigation lock to be located downstream of the dam and riverward of the existing lock. Replacement lock construction began in 2004 with highway and utility relocations and continued through 2012 with the completion of the cofferdam structure and prefabricated components that are currently being stored at other Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) facilities until needed.  After a temporary suspension of construction activities due to funding constraints with the Inland Waterways Trust Fund (IWTF), construction resumed after funding returned to the project in FY15.

IMPORTANCE: A new lock is required at Chickamauga Dam because of structural deficiencies of the existing lock resulting from physical expansion of the concrete structure.  This phenomenon of concrete growth (formally known as alkali aggregate reaction, or AAR) was observed soon after initial construction in 1940 and is caused by a reaction between the alkali in the cement and the aggregate.  Even with significant maintenance efforts, this expansion threatens the structural integrity of the existing lock and limits its life. 

STATUS:

The $240 million Lock Chamber contract includes 13 total options; four options have been exercised through FY18 valued at approximately $95.7 million (exercised options are 22 percent complete). The $245 million Lock Chamber contract, awarded in September 2017 with 13 options, is fully funded and approximately 42% complete.  The $61 million Upstream Approach Wall contract was awarded in September 2021; mobilization to the site began in March 2022.

• Must be a US citizen
• Must fill out and submit site visit form by Friday, June 10
• If you are NOT a US citizen (i.e. Foreign National) a different background check form must be filled out and must be received by June 3 – contact Steve Poteet @ steve.poteet@hdrinc.com no later than May 30 if you need this form
• All attendees must be cleared by the Government background check in order to be allowed on the tour
• All attendees must wear leather shoes (no open toe shoes or sandals permitted)
• This is an active construction site – please dress appropriately! It will involve a lot of walking and potentially climbing of stairs and of course may be affected by weather. USACE will provide a safety orientation prior to the tour.
• We also must adhere to any current local or Government Covid-19 protocols which could include wearing of masks and social distancing. 
• Note – college students are welcome; subject to the same background check requirements

This event should qualify for 1 PDH. No PDH charge for CEC members; $10 PDH charge for non-CEC members (however the PDH cost can be applied to membership!)
